Southern Wedding Tradition: Burying the Bourbon

Burying the Bourbon Merriment Events Katie Stoops Tuckahoe Plantation MW0442 MW0447

Of all the Southern wedding traditions, burying bourbon is a favorite among our clients. Tradition says you must bury a full bottle of bourbon, upside down, exactly 30 days prior to your wedding at the ceremony site to ward off rain. After the ceremony the bride and groom dig up the bottle and take a celebratory swig! So far it’s worked: outdoor ceremonies have been rain-free, and, for the most part, we’ve had sunny skies. One tip: be sure to mark the location where you bury the bottle with a rock or shell. There’s nothing worse than having to hunt!

Mimi and Clarke’s winter wedding featured in Virginia Living

Designed around the idea of “golden glow,” Mimi and Clarke’s winter wedding was a bright light last February. From the long stemmed hurricanes, embellished with gilded poet’s laurel that maids carried during the ceremony in place of traditional bouquets; to the Rosa Clara beaded wedding gown Mimi wore; to their grand entrance into the Rotunda at the Jefferson to 300 adoring friends and family; to their getaway in their treasured 1979 Volkswagen Westfalia van, Mimi and Clarke’s wedding was so classically elegant but very fresh and original. We feel so fortunate to have been a part of it. Thank you to all of the people who expertly brought Mimi and Clarke’s ideas to life, most especially Jeanette McKittrick Floral Design, La Tavola (who despite some of the worst winter weather in the middle of the country got our linens to us on time! thank you!), Jimmy Harris at The Jefferson Hotel, Jen Fariello Photography, Amanda Robinson at Sweet Fix, Ms. Mo of Mo’Soul (represented by Sam Hill), Jimmy Oliver Event Technologies, Parrot Design Studio, Ave 42, and, most especially, my team. Please rush and get a copy of Virginia Living Magazine to see this wedding and many others that took place in the Commonwealth.

Christina and Tom’s film by Josh Gooden

Wednesday, November 18th, 2015

There’s just nothing quite as wonderful as seeing film from a client’s wedding day, but Christina and Tom’s film by Josh Gooden completely blew us away. Josh told their story so beautifully, in a way that augmented the story captured in still pictures. We’re such firm believers in videography and always tell clients its one investment you’ll be so, so glad you made.

a wedding full of heart!

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2015

Katie and Max’s May wedding at home on the Northern Neck was truly full of heart. From the brightly colored heart confetti that accompanied their letterpress invitations, to the hearts throughout the reception — along the walkway to the ceremony on the waterfront, handmade muslin hearts on each place setting, brightly patterned hearts on escort card tags. So much love was put into this celebration.

Bouquets inspired by southern states we call home…

It was such a pleasure to work on this story last spring with Patricia Lyons and Janie Medley for Southern Weddings Magazine’s current issue. We were tasked with bringing the personality and charm of six southern states to life in bouquets. For instance, while Tennessee was a bit wild and folk-inspired, in homage to its country music roots, Florida centered on warm, citrus tropical inspired elements. Pick up the latest issue to see the full story!

a spring wedding at tuckahoe plantation

Wednesday, September 4th, 2013

We were so honored to work with M + W on their spring wedding at the venerable and ever beautiful Tuckahoe Plantation, captured here by Katie Stoops. Our sweet clients entertained nearly 300 guests under a sperry sailcloth tent on a perfect spring evening, following a Catholic ceremony at a church nearby. The colors were soft and whispery shades of pale, buttercup yellow, mint green and peach. We showered out of town guests with local indulgences — hardywood beer, virginia cookies (with a heart piped over Richmond!), lamplighter coffee. All in all it was a picture perfect day, don’t you think? Could the perfect weather have had something to do with the bottle of bourbon the couple buried at Tuckahoe a month to the day before saying I do? We’d like to think so.

purple wedding inspiration

I recently had the honor to design my sister-in-law’s wedding. It was such a joy to source so many locally-grown flowers and to work with such a pretty color palette. Nicole and Monty were married at home on a beautiful day in May, among an intimate group of family members. They exchanged vows in a service officiated by my mother-in-law, Monty’s mother, in their backyard. Afterward, we enjoyed a buffet of sweets — blackberry-vanilla cupcakes, lavender macarons, lavender and white cookies (a play on the classic black and white cookie), mini coconut cream pies and chocolate truffles topped with sugared pansies. Special thanks to Eleise Theuer for sharing these lovely photographs with us!

Just a few pictures courtesy my trusty iPhone of a classic wedding we had the pleasure of planning & designing for our clients who were married in April at The Wren Chapel. Following the ceremony, Cailin & James invited guests to celebrate in a clear top tent in the Oval Garden at The Williamsburg Inn. Janie Medley rocked the flowers, as usual!
