belated richmond wedding wednesdays
There’s a space at Tuckahoe Plantation…a pretty vine-covered trellis…where I’ve always wanted to design an event. {see below} The event would have to be small. Really small. Like twenty people max, but it could be so, so beautiful.

richmond wedding wednesdays: blandfield plantation
Blandfield Plantation is a dreamy mid-Georgian Tidewater Mansion dating from the Colonial Period, in Essex County, Virginia along the Rappahannock River. Blandfield offers a few options for event rental, but I imagine this event would take place on the grounds outside of the mansion on an afternoon in the spring.

richmond wedding wednesdays: sarah and john
These are just a few of my favorite details from Sarah and John’s wedding a few weekends ago at the Bloemendaal House at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. My sweet friend Janie featured their entire wedding yesterday at The Brides Cafe. Sarah and John are amazing people — we were so happy to work with you two! Best wishes to you!

richmond wedding wednesdays: a luncheon at Balliceaux
I’m planning a bridesmaids’ luncheon for a client at Balliceaux, a very hip un-Richmond-like restaurant in The Fan. Here are a few things that are inspiring me for the party…Dandelion Ranch (forever in love with their work), billy buttons, and silhouettes.
Balliceaux’s back room is great for small cocktail parties and luncheons (think 50 guests for a cocktail party or 15 for a luncheon). The design of the restaurant is so inspiring, the menu is adventurous and the heirloom-style cocktails are to die for (my favorite is The Hemingway).

richmond wedding wednesdays: crittenden studio

Crittenden Studio is one of my favorite places in town for events. Because the design of space is so minimal, there are lots of possibilities for event design. Look back to Emily’s wedding for more ideas…
Crittenden is located in the Manchester district of Richmond in the Corrugated Box building. Ellie of Savor Cafe is right next store (she also does amazing catering). The capacity of the space is 200, and the current rental fee for Friday and Saturday night events is just a little over $1,000.

Richmond Wedding Wednesdays: The Bloemendaal House at Lewis Ginter
The Bloemendaal House at Lewis Ginter is one of my favorite locations. Although you feel secluded and tucked away on your own private country residence for the night, the venue is close enough to downtown Richmond to be convenient for your guests, and unlike many comparable venues that have a home away from home feeling, Bloemeendaal has all the amenities on site you’ll need for your party – Meriwether Godsey catering on site and many rentals (tables, up to 200 chairs and one 30 x 60 tent available spring through fall).
Many brides are married in the in one of the two gardens in front of the house and host their reception on the patio in front of Bloemendaal. The site can host up to 250 for a cocktail reception and about 140 for a seated dinner. For more information, email facilityevents{at}lewisginter.org.

Some planning notes…
- Tuckahoe typically can handle up to 250 guests for a wedding.
- There is no indoor event space at the plantation. There is a changing room for the bride that can be rented for an additional fee.
- The plantation offers both ceremony and reception locations (be sure to check pricing for both).
- Most importantly: a wedding at Tuckahoe has to be built from the ground up. i.e. Renters must bring in tents, chairs, tables, lighting, bathrooms (for guest lists of more than 100), heating or air — basically all of the “mechanics” of the event. Be sure to do careful budgeting and research before you commit to any off-site event location.
Richmond Wedding Wednesdays: Virginia Center for Architecture
One of my favorite event spaces in Richmond is The Branch House, which is home to The Virginia Center for Architecture. It’s a great space for smaller weddings and cocktail style receptions. Ceremonies can be performed on the lawn in the back of the house (pictured above), while the party can take place in the Long Hall and the Great Hall indoors (pictured below).
The Tudor Revival style house on Monument Avenue was built in early 1900s for the John Kerr Branch family as a winter residence. It housed the Branch’s collection of Italian Renaissance antiques and tapestries. The interior has been restored to its former glory, since it lived many lives in between being a residence and a museum (at one time it was headquarters to the organization that was the precursor for United Way and it was also home to an insurance agency). Now The Branch House operates as a museum.

Richmond Wedding Wednesdays #37, The Italian Garden at Maymont
I made today’s inspiration board with Maymont’s Italian Garden in mind. A ceremony under the shelter of the pergola and wisteria sounds so romantic.
